L'aggettivo male vuol dire “maschio, maschile”: a billy goat is a male goat, un caprone è il maschio della capra. Anche l'aggettivo masculine significa “maschile” ma nel senso di “mascolino”; cioè indica ciò che è (o si ritiene che sia) tipico o relativo agli uomini: She spoke in a deep, masculine voice, parlò con una voce profonda e mascolina. Si usa masculine anche per indicare il genere maschile dei sostantivi: «Der Tisch» is a masculine noun in German, «der Tisch» è un sostantivo maschile in tedesco.
